A time to kill movie parents guide11/21/2023 A psychiatrist is shown to have fraudulently misused his rights to deem people insane or sane to curve verdicts. A somewhat biased judge inadvertently allows the murderer to give his opinion about the murders and also allows a statutory rapist to confess - both coerced by the district attorney. The district attorney is evidently a racist, backed by the KKK - and can be seen as the main antagonist of the movie alongside the rapists. The jury is all-white (as it is in Just Mercy or several other courtroom dramas) and is shown to be racially biased. An assault rifle (the capital murder weapon) is shown several times throughout the movie as a piece of evidence, uncensored. This is a brutal courtroom sequence, with lots of yelling and disturbing imagery throughout whether it be the rape description that closes out the trial, or the coerced confession of a statutory rapist by the district attorney. Fortunately, the searing witness accounts and points of the trial conflict a racist judge and attorney almost flawlessly. The courtroom sequence is somewhat disorderly throughout, with sprinkles of objections and tons of fiery bickering thrown all across the movie. However, he ends up hitting and paralyzing a National Guardsmen meant to protect Brigance instead. Resting at the top of the courthouse, he attempts to shoot Brigance JFK-style as he leaves the courtroom. This sequence almost brought me to tears.įinally, the same Klansmen who assaulted Roark gives one final bid to bring the case to a speedy ending. Fortunately, she is found the next morning and taken to the hospital. Driven out into a horde of Klansmen, Roark is hung by her hands onto a pole, stripped down and beaten, and left for the dogs by the capital murder victim's brother (who joined the Klan after the murder - at the beginning of the movie). Dragged into the police car, the Klansman leaves the scene with her car. Immediately after, she is beaten to a pulp by the officer with the aid of a Klansman. With hints of drunkenness from Roark, the officer has her step out of her car - without license, insurance, or proof of registration. While leaving town at night, Roark (one of Brigance's accomplices) is pulled over for speeding. A few minutes later, as we investigate the wreckage of the house, his dog arrives from the bushes.Īs the movie approaches the climax, the final blow arrives. The defense attorney's house is ultimately burned to the ground by the Klan in searing fashion Brigance (the attorney)'s only fear is the death of his dog. However, as the courtroom sequence (which I will analyze later) grows more intense, the events around the town go the exact same direction. Not too long after this, the defense attorney's wife receives a call urging her to evacuate her daughter from her house soon after, we see a brightly burning cross outside the house while horrifying music plays - thankfully, nobody is injured. It only gets worse from there the defense attorney's secretary is assaulted by a group of Klansmen with her husband, leading to his death. Amongst the details of this sequence - several Klansmen' masks are ripped off, immediately triggering scuffles the courthouse is evacuated and a young man (part of the rallyists) throws a flare right at the Klavern's Grand Dragon from above, setting his uniform (and consequently him) ablaze in a sudden and excruciating inferno that will make anybody gasp for breath or turn away from the screen in horror. On the first day of the trial, a riot ensues between the KKK and a group of rallyists. A first-person perspective rape is shown in detail a capital double-murder is shown also in great detail both of these brutal sequences are shown before the Ku Klux Klan even gets involved. This movie is a brutal mess to watch at times. But, as requested by the platform, I will go ahead and give my review. Simply put, this movie is so easy to sympathize with, given I live in the South myself. Even in VHS quality, it still struck chords throughout my mind. Having split this movie over two nights (an hour and a half the first night and about an hour the second night), I can say this movie is one of the most intense movies I have ever watched.
